Toyota Prado 90s multi meter display...repair?

The Toyota Prado 90s multi meter display is obsolete today, considering we now have new gadgets like handheld GPS and smart phones. Nevertheless, the console stares at you each time you sit in the car and it is something that will bug you eventually. The easiest solution to this is either to have it replaced or permanently removed. The latter is out of the question to most Prado enthusiasts. Hence, you either get it replaced with a new or used unit. OR, you can always try to fix it.

For around RM350, you can get a new Toyota Prado 90 multi display meter unit for your car. In Malaysia, you can find it being traded on Mudah and sometimes on Facebook as well. You really gotta shop around for the best deal. Some of us have seen it go up for as low as RM280.

Thanks to the Malaysia Toyota Prado 90s group, we now have enough members who are able to advise on how to try and salvage a damaged multi meter display. As it turns out, typically it is the polarizer that has broken down, making the meter looks like it has completely broken down. One of the only available guide to restoring this can be found on the link below:

The write in the article on the link above is probably a Malaysian as well. On of our group member, Mr KG attempted to repair his Prado’s multi meter unit with the help and advice from Mr ZZ (good chap by the way). Below is the actual picture of his multi meter before the restoration is done.

Those cracking surfaces are actually just damaged polarized filters

As Mr KG later discovered, the main item that actually degraded or broken with the Toyota Prado 90 multi meter is only the polarized film and it cost him less than RM35 to fix on his own. These film can be purchased online and it is the main item that actually needs replacement (and possibly the T5 bulbs too). More information on the repair process later.
